, which is very apt for the maintenance activity which we do this season.
CTC and Ainthinai have crossed barriers in preserving our lovely environment. Each and everyone of you have dedicated your time and energy for a better future.

Event 1:
CTC Ainthinai - Saplings Maintenance Drive at Shollinganallur( Mayanaboomi) on 6th April'17
Our Saplings at Sholinganallur Mayanabhoomi is getting protected with Tree Guards. 10+ saplings have been fenced and watered
Importance of Tree guards:
Tree guards are an easy way to protect the tender bark of young trees. A healthy tree can attribute its vigor to the vascular system that exists within its trunk. Similarly, when a tree’s vascular system is damaged or disrupted, its health will decline. This is why it is so important to ensure that a tree’s trunk is protected, especially during its first few years in the ground.

CTC Ainthinai - Home Composting Session @ Shollinganallur on 8th April'17
Composting and it's benefits:
Composting is the process of giving life back to your soil using organic materials. In a forest, this process happens naturally. Trees drop their leaves, shrubs wither away, seeds break down, and these materials then naturally decompose, becoming part of the soil they came from and delivering nutrients that made up their bodies back to the earth. In an urban setting, it’s possible to recreate that process using food and yard waste.
Compost is made entirely from organic matter, which means it’s filled with minerals and nutrients that are ideal for growing food. Compost is way more valuable than regular soil in many ways
Compost acts as a natural sponge, storing water and holding moisture in the soil for plants to use when needed. When it rains, water that falls on land covered in compost can actually soak into the soil, rather than washing off into the storm drains
Healthy soil removes excess carbon from the air and stores it in the ground (that carbon then becomes part of trees and other plants that grow out of that soil)
Event 3:
Tree Plantation and Saplings Maintenance Drive at Valluvar Kottam with Thuvakkam Team. Planted 20+ saplings and did Maintenance for 80+ Saplings with the support of Thuvakkam Volunteers, Chenn
Activities carried out during the event:

Importance of adding Mulch:
Mulch insulates the soil helping to provide a buffer from heat and cold temperatures.Mulch retains water helping to keep the roots moist.Mulch keeps weeds out to help prevent root competition.Mulch prevents soil compaction.Mulch reduces lawn mower damage.
Event 4:
Saplings are being watered by hiring the water tanker.
Importance of watering:
Plants normally use water in various processes including photosynthesis, transpiration, support system and nutrient distribution. Without a sufficient supply of water, plants may not develop well and some may even die.

Pruning and its importance:
Pruning is a practice that involves removing specific parts of a tree or plant, most often the branches, buds, and roots.
Pruning allows to shape and direct the growth of a tree, so it looks full and healthy throughout its life.

Event 6:
Apart from the regular maintenance events there were couple of watering sessions @ Kambarajapuram and Manapakkam on Saturday(8th April'17) and Sunday(9th Apil'17) respectively by our Volunteers.
3 tankers of water was distributed to the Saplings at Kambarajapuram.
15+ drip irrigation bottles and many more bottles to be installed in the upcoming days to overcome the drought.
1500 litres of water had been used to quench the thirst of saplings at the riverbeds of Manapakkam.
“Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.”
