4. Rehabilitation

After the initial focus on rescue (phase 1) and immediate relief (phase 2) CTC's next focus will be on rehabilitation (phase 3). The middle/upper class in Chennai city who were initially hit by the rain/floods have gone back to their normal lives. Its only the really hit slums/poor of Chennai and the villages/hamlets of Cuddalore that will take a long time to get back on their feet. CTC is planning to adopt a hamlet or slum and do everything towards the reconstruction including rebuilding shelters, helping repair their sources of livelihood, build proper water and waste management systems and educate them about ways of handling such natural adversities. Basically we want to help in building a model community.

This will be a longer term effort that will require volunteers and significant funds. If you know any NGO or Company CSR which is willing to support such an initiative please get in touch with us.

Relief Update

Hundreds of our members have volunteered round the clock in the past few days in supporting our relief efforts. A few snapshots below:

When the capital was drowning, more people’s concentration would be towards the Capital than other places. So as Cuddalore. Most of the villages in Cuddalore District have been affected badly. A village named “Annavelli’ is one among the severely affected areas in Cuddalore. After confirming with our friends, we decided to contribute from our side to this village from the relief materials which have been sent from Bangalore Volunteers. A truck had been dispatched to Annavelli village with Rice, Water, Biscuits, Milk Pockets, Blankets and used cloths. Below are the observations from our Volunteer Sathish, who had visited Annavelli village and distributed the relief materials by hand.
1. Many people are living in huts and still the water is flowing on the streets
2. They are using jutesacks to sleep at nights
3. A friend named Elanchezhian and his family members are helping the village people by collecting materials from other places
4. The materials have been put into a bag and given to each family as a kit
5. People had been asked to provide the Family Card and a token had been issued to collect the kits
6. People are so polite and they stand on the queue to collect the materials
7. Our friend Sathish was roamed around the nearby villages and observed the real situation of the nearby villages
8. Elanchezhiyan and his family members are really doing a great job on supporting and helping the affected people of Annavelli
Thanks a lot to Sathish who accompanied the truck from Chennai to Cuddalore and brought the help from his friend and observed the real situation of the village.
Special thanks to Chennai Trekking Club volunteers, Other volunteers and Jaigopal Karodia School Management for providing the space to stock the relief materials.

Relief distribution by our volunteers at a poor neighborhood near Perungalatur. Some areas in the city outskirts are still under water.

Ongoing unloading, segregation and distribution of relief materials by hundreds of volunteers at our CTC Relief Center in Tambaram
Our sincere thanks to the management of Jaigopal Garodia National Higher Secondary School in East Tambaram for offering their school premises for the past 4 days to run our relief efforts. As the school has reopened to students we have now shifted our location to Annail Arul marriage hall, near camp road signal
Heartfelt thanks also to hotel GK restaurant who has provided free food to 300+ volunteers in the past 4 days.

Food distribution / Animal rescue by CTC & Blue Cross of Chennai near Ayappathangal flooded by nearby Porur lake

Distribution of relief materials near Tiruporur

Area Survey by our volunteers near Thiruverkadu to Nolambur in North Chennai to identify the real needy/poor who have been badly impacted by flooding of nearby water bodies and rivers in more remote areas where relief has not reached:
