Nice Writeup from Sivakumar Shanmugavelu  :

For most of the guys who are working in IT Companies, their day starts only after 9. That too on weekend, it will be only at noon. I’m also one among those slaves who wear branded dresses and have two or more credit cards and begging the money from friends during the month ends. But in outside, proudly says that working in an MNC. J
For me also the days were gone like waking up at noon on weekends by skipping breakfast, before I was joined in CTC tree planting activities. Once I have been getting involved into those activities, week end long sleep was vanished. Since in tree planting activities we need to reach the spot before the sun started to fry us.
In the same way on Kaatupakkam tree maintenance, I woke up and at 5.30 and left room by room to join with Praveen. But this idiot  made me to wait for half an hour in Camp road and once we started got few call from Sid and Aravind stating that, volunteers were reached the spot already and waiting for others to come. At that time we were just crossing the Chennai Airport by holding around 10+ two liters of soft drink bottles in hand, as we are trying our drip irrigation approach using those water bottles. I asked Aravind to show the new volunteers about the saplings which we planted around the areas.

Once we reached there with half an hour delay, got few scolding from our fellow friends and started explaining our maintenance activity plan to the volunteers. The activities which were instructed are removing the weeds which are grown around the saplings, fixing the tree guards, keeping throne branches around the saplings, applying manure, implementing our water bottle drip irrigation and watering.

We explained how effectively we can use the 2 liter soft drink bottle instead of just throwing into dust bin, which will be burned somewhere here later. By cutting the bottom portion of the bottle and  making a safety pin hole at the top of the bottle nearer to cap, the drip irrigator will be ready. We covered the pin hole using a plastic cover in order to ensure the water flow will not be stopped by the soil or clay. Once the instruction was over, we asked the volunteers to group themselves to kick start our maintenance work. As we did not have enough tools, few people accompanied with others too.

Within 10 mins, all were urged in search of first aid kid and some medic service. As one of our fellow friend was caught into an serious issue :P that while removing the soil, he cut his finger by a piece of glass. Immediately our medic team head :P Durga, acted quickly and used the band aid to stop the bleeding. Thanks to Durga for her quick response to save our friends life. It was around 9, and then we asked the volunteers to have the breakfast. Everyone had the idly, vada and Coffee in the nearby shops. I and Masu were aggressively cutting the throne trees for protecting the saplings.

Once everyone had the breakfast, we resumed our maintenance work. The Sun did not show any mercy on us. In our volunteers, our medic team, Durga, brought her daughter who is doing schooling. We were so happy that, Durga’s interest on making her daughter as socio activist. She was so much interested on doing maintenance works. She also actively participated in CTC-EFI Thiruvanmiyur Beach Cleanup. The maintenance work was continuous even though the sun was trying to make us too tired.
By seeing our hard work under that hot sun, one of the resident offered water melon milk shake for us which was boosted our energy. And the association secretary brought the biscuits and cool drinks. And it was almost 1 o’clock and we called it for the day who wants to leave. Since that time almost we completed 90% work and remaining 10% can be done with the few volunteers. We gathered at one place posed for a group pic. Once the volunteers started moving, remaining people continued our work. Again to quench our thirst, God had sent a Gulfi guy and everyone had a Gulfi ice. As usual we were fighting and tasting some one else's gulfi ice. Hope after seeing those photos of Gulfi ice, the volunteers who  left early were left stomach burning :P

After an hour we completed all our maintenance activities and we re-visited the entire area, to check any tools which we left over. Since we had missed at least 1 tool in every plantation drives. Luckily we didn’t miss any tool. Before we were heading to our home, Aravind revealed his surprise of giving his birthday treat, which he told on previous day. After few mins of discussion we decide to go to Anjappar. We started our vehicles in search of the restaurant in and around Porur. On the way we saw Madurai Kannappar Restaurant, we parked our vehicle and entered into there.

At the extreme we grabbed the plate from the server before he places it to table. But we start our war on non-veg world, our two poor vegetarian fellow friends, completed their lunch and just watching our activities. After everyone completed, except me, I was trying to complete my Chicken biriyani, the fellows ordered ice creams. Once the ice creams were received these people asked the server to keep in another table in the next room. As everyone completed their lunch, I was in the middle of chicken biriyani. I was worried that if I go there after completing this biriyani, I will see only empty bowls. So decide to have the ice cream and to have biriyani later. As usual, fighting on ice creams. Finally I completed my biriyani after having the ice cream. Then we asked the bill and Aravind paid the bill and we came out. Our tummy was full and satisfied with the treat which he had given this treat after 6 months of his birthday.

And we started our vehicle to our room. In the middle way Aravind called and enquired about his cap which costs Rs. 500 and 1 day old. While eating at the restaurant, he kept the cap at the side of the table and forgot to take it back. And at 4, I reached room with fullest satisfaction on my tummy and greatest satisfaction on heart by our successful start of our maintenance activity.
