On Sunday morning June 19th more than 5800 volunteers collected 59 tonnes of garbage in Chennai and 12 other cities as part of the 7thyear edition of the Chennai Coastal Cleanup organized by the Chennai Trekking Club.
In Chennai 4500 volunteers from 140 organizations including Corporates, NGOs and other groups segregated 38 tonnes from 20km of beaches from Marina to Uthandi and recycled 56% while the rest moved to the landfill. This is part of an annual awareness campaign to sensitize the public on our growing garbage footprint and the negative impact of plastics on our environment and the need to start segregating at home and say no to single use plastics in order to create a more sustainable future.
In collaboration with the Chennai Coastal Cleanup, 12 other cities including Tirunelveli, Trichy, Yelagiri, Pondichery, Hyderabad, Cumbum, Tuticorin, Coimbatore, Parvathi Valley, Kanyakumari, Cuddalore and Tenkasi 1300 volunteers from 10 NGOs collected 21 tonnes of garbage from rivers, lakes and beaches to take the awareness to a national level.
The event is an initiative by the Chennai Trekking Club in association with The Hindu presented by Casa Grande and powered by Milaap. Associate sponsors: KVB, LifeStraw and Change Our Future.

Over a period of 2 months (May, June) hundreds of volunteers ran 15 awareness initiatives across the city and social media to sensitize the public on the need to avoid single use plastics and reduce our garbage footprint through segregation, recycling and composting. Initiatives included cleanups, flash mobs, wall paintings, #NoPlasticChallenge, community involvement, awareness sessions on segregation and composting, kids drawing competitions, waste 2 wealth workshops and awareness through running/cycling/swimming, zero-green initiative with police department, photography competitions and quizzes.
